“I don’t say I look my most beautiful, I FEEL my most beautiful…”

For Black History Month it gives me great pleasure to introduce you to the American actress, singer, television host, producer and director, Tracee Ellis Ross who is known for her lead roles in the television series Girlfriends (2000), which I absolutely loved watching when it was on TV, and Black-ish (2014). She also owns Pattern Beauty, a hair-care line for curly hair. It won’t be a surprise to hear that she is the daughter of Diana Ross and won her ‘black-ish’ Golden Globe Award at age 44, 44 years after her mother, Diana Ross, won her own Golden Globe for Lady Sings the Blues (1972).

“I was raised by society to dream of my wedding, but I wish I had been dreaming of my life.

There are 2 things about Tracee that stand out for me;

  1. Tracee has worked as a fashion editor for Mirabella and New York Magazine. I just love her style and grace, for me she breaks the model of traditional beauty. She’s outside the box pushing the boundaries, creating her own rules and unapologetic living her life. I am embodying her spirit. Not only she is embracing her singleness, but Ross is celebrating the body that she has and the woman that she is.
  2. She is shining the light on a life without children. In her numerous interviews she shows her passion about the way unmarried women without children are represented in popular culture.

“These are very big and very personal questions that aren’t anyone’s business but that somehow, like the right to choose, become fodder for public conversation. Some of the ability to reflect on what I really want comes from pushing up against a society that shames me for not having the expected trappings,”

Tracee is an inspiration, embodying the ancestorial spirit that I am now emboding myself.
